The clip featured in our featured video section has made its way around the networks for some time. I was reminded of this video after receiving a phone call from a family member whose neighbor was shot last night during a home invasion. The clip demonstrates what kind of force we can find ourselves up against. The bad guys are upping the anty because they are going into homes expecting a fight. There are more reports of bad guys using body armor and posing as law enforcement officers during home invasions.

Our homes are suppose to be the place we retreate to escape the worries and concerns of the world. Can we be safe in our own home? The economic pressures are only now showing signs of spilling over into more aggressive criminals. I discussed in the last podcast how your safety is your personal responsibility. I don’t carry a gun to protect you, I carry a gun to protect my family and myself. The homeowner in the video had made the decision to install cameras and to have a plan which included a readily accessible firearm.

Do you have a plan? What would you do if you saw four guys with guns roll up in your driveway… call 911 and wait?! Avoidance is the best way to stay safe, unfortunately when the threat is coming at you in your own home the time to avoid has past, it’s time to fight.

Train the way you want to fight so you will fight the way you trained.

Make it Safe!

How To Make Your Home Safe in Three Easy Steps!

Our home is the place where we retreat from the world. Unfortunately, we sometimes leave our homes exposed to the threats we are trying to escape from. A property crime occurs every three seconds and a home burglary occurs every sixteen seconds. “I did not think it would happen to me…” which is the same exact thing I use to think. Below are three easy steps to take to make your home more of a safe retreat from the threats of the world. Nothing is ever 100% effective when it comes to stopping a crime, but it is our responsibility to protect ourselves and our homes. Take a few moments and take these three steps it will make a difference!

1) Make sure your 911 information is correct.
On May 21, 2009 a Colorado family found out you can not rely on information in the 911 system to send help to the correct location,http://www.denverpost.com/aurora/ci_12420522, and it was deadly. The 911 system in your area obtains its address information from different sources including the postal service, planning departments and phone companies. A incorrect data entry at any point could be the difference in you getting the help you need. Does your area have streets by the same names but have “Place, Court, Drive” or whatever at the end of the street name? Put yourself in the place of the Colorado family. Help was needed, but it was sent several miles away.
Action Step: Place a call on your home phone to the non-emergency number for the various emergency service providers in your area including fire, police and ambulance. Explain you want to make sure they have your house number, street name and phone number correct in their 911 system.

2) Keep your doors locked
Keep your doors locked even when you are home. Locks can buy time and sometimes discourage people from trying to gain entry into places where they should not be. A lock is meant to keep honest people honest coupled with the fact that most locks can be defeated with basic techniques including a strong kick. If you lose a key replace all of your locks immediately. The lost key could be someones ticket to your home.
Action Step: Go lock your doors and check your windows too.

3) Keep People Out of Your Home
Do you have someone clean your house or has a repairman been in your home lately? It may not be that person who comes back to break into your home, but they have friends. The most basic elements of personal protection is awareness. Once someone has been in your home they become aware of what you have and can make a better assessment of how to take it. The next time you order pizza to be delivered to your home meet the delivery guy outside. If your dishwasher needs to be repaired the repairman should stay in the kitchen and not be allowed to other parts of the home. Keep the doors to the others rooms in your home closed. .
Action Step: Be very selective on who comes into your home. Reassess those who have access to your home. Do you have valuable possession visible in the entry way of your home? Be smart and be aware.
