Our focus at KSA Defense has been equipping individuals the necessary knowledge, skill and attitude to protect themselves. The primary focus has been the safe and proper use of firearms.  Over the last several months we have witnessed  drastic changes in the United States as the economy has continued to slide and we find ourselves on the brink of a collapse. There is always a possibility that we will pull out and return to some level of familiar economic stability. On the other hand it would be better to be prepared than suprised.

Shortly before Katrina made landfall some friends had retreated to our home to get out of the path of the storm. We watched the news reports of the devastation in  New Orleans and the Gulf Coast with a “glad that wasn’t me attitude.” I found myself a few weeks later challenged by a friend who asked me” What if that would have been your and your family in the path of the storm?” We would have been taken by surprise. There was no extra food in the house to speak of, we did not have a bug out kit for our family or either means of being prepared.  The thought of not having any plan or prepared resources scared me. I immediately set out on a quest. I had trained myself and had began training others to protect themselves with a firearm, but I  had neglected the most basic level of preparedness.

I consumed resources from FEMA, internet, books, magazines and anything else related to preparedness. I was overwhelmed and did not know where to start. The frustration turned into another obvious solution. Practice what you preach! I broke it down into Knowledge, Skill and Attitude and keeping it simple. The basic plan was developed along with basic supplies and resources. We began networking with others who shared our same fears and it turned out to be a lot more folks what we expected. You may notice I  have not used the word “survival” as I don’t thinks it’s about survival it’s about being prepared. Survival is only realized by being properly prepared.

Prepare for what? You need to be prepared for anything outside your status quo. A job loss, natural disaster, terrorist attack or a number of other scenarios. This is not wacko survivalism it is basic preparedness and it should be a part of everyone’s protection plan. The natural thing for me was to begin developing a basic preparedness course you could download and work through on your own. So that is what I am doing. The course is almost finished and I am very excited to share it with my KSA Defense audience.  To be notified of the availability of the course please be sure to register on the www.ksadefense.com home page.

What is KSA Defense?

by admin on October 15, 2008

Here we go embarking on our newest chapter in KSA Defense. KSA stands for Knowledge, Skill and Attitude. I explain to each group of students that I can impart the knowledge, help you develop skill, but the attitude is all up to you. Attitude is how KSA Defense was conceived and is what will drive its direction and growth.  KSA Defense provides training to individuals so they can provide for their own personal protection. Currently we offer the NRA Personal Protection Inside the Home Course. This class does meet the requirements to apply for an Arkansas Concealed Handgun License. Visit the Course Information page to learn more about the class and dates of upcoming classes.

It all started for me on an April evening . My family I came home to find our house had been broken into and several items were gone. The truth is we were invaded by a pack of wolves! Yes, wolves aka bad guys, scumbags. Our personal belonging were sifted through, thrown on the floor, and in some cases destroyed. The wave of emotions begin with fear then comes the anger and then fear comes again.

My wife and I walked through the house with an officer as we pointed out the obvious things missing. We entered the bedroom and I saw a shotgun laying on the bed. I was initially relieved as this was a particularly expensive gun. We then entered closet where my gun safe had been located. The term gun safe is truly a subjective term. The safe I had was a thin metal box strictly intended to keep my children away from the guns. The wolves did not have too much trouble getting what they wanted. I told the officer I could not believe they would leave the shotgun. I looked closer and notice it was loaded. I commented it was not loaded when it was in the safe. He said, “Oh that was in case you came home…” My entire world view shifted at that very moment. I nor my family would ever be the same.

We as a family had lived life like most everyone else. The security we enjoyed was a mirage. We could not spend the night in the house for several days as we were afraid they would come back. The day we decided to go home we found they indeed had come back and left us a note written in the fingerprint dust left by the police. I went from scared and consumed with self imposed pity to full tilt intentional survival. My family was under attack. We made immediate security upgrades and this journey began.

A lot has happened in these years since the invasion. It has been a journey of discovery, changes in routine and most importantly a change in attitude. You can fill your head with the knowledge and train you body to act with skill, but your mind has to have the attitude to put it all together. In everything we do the attitude has to be the foundation so we can put the knowledge and skill to use.

KSA Defense Tip
Your home is vulnerable to invasion. Take a walk around the house and look at the windows and doors as places of entry.  Take a 360 degree view of your property. Are there places where people could hide and watch for how and when you leave your home? I have talked to several people that have had their homes invaded and we all share the same opinion: there was more we could have done to make our home and family more safe.Take a few minutes and look at your home. There are quick and inexpensive things you can do to make your home more safe. Here are just a few:

  1. Use your security system. If you don’t have one, get one.
  2. Install motion lights in the carport or garage so when you come home after dark the light will always be on.
  3. Replace the soft brass screws that came with your exterior doors locks and hinges with longer screws. This helps to reinforce the door from being kicked in. It may not prevent it, but it will strengthen the door.
  4. Be Alert! Watch for things out of place. Unfamiliar people, vehicles and things that just don’t seem right. Make a note with a description put the date and time on the note and then request additional patrols in your area.
  5. Have a plan! If you or a family comes home and something does not look or feel right, honor that feeling and contact the local law enforcement agency.

Wolves look for sheep. They watch and wait for the right time to attack and they most often travel in packs.
